The Hampton Rovers take part in the VAFA senior finals for the first time since the premiership year of 2001 this Sunday when they take on Prahran. Also in action are the Under 19s who take on Mazenod in the 2nd Semi Final Friday night.
Since 2001, the Rovers have spent two seasons in B Section, three in C Section, and this year in D1 Section. Its been an up and down season with some massive wins, a nervous losing streak, and a nine-game winning streak. After 18 rounds, Hampton finished third on the ladder after missing an opportunity to cement second position with a 5-point loss at the hands of minor premiers Oakleigh.
Now its time for the business end of the season. Oakleigh, Old Mentonians, Hampton Rovers and Prahran make up the top four. The action kicks-off with both games this Sunday.
In the First Semi Final, the Hampton Rovers face Prahran at Cheltenham Reserve (Weatherall Road, Cheltenham). The Rovers have beaten the two-blues on both occasions in 2007 – 43 points at Boss James Reserve and 14 points a couple of weeks back at Toorak Park. They?ll be looking to make it three and advance to the Preliminary Final Saturday-week at Trevor Barker Oval.
In the Second Semi Final, Oakleigh take on Old Mentonians at Trevor Barker Oval. Mentone have had the wood on the minor premiers winning on both occasions in 2007. Both games commence at 2pm on Sunday.
The Hampton Rovers Under 19s have had an outstanding season finishing second on the ladder. After a couple of losses early on, they?ve only lost twice since Round 3. They take on Mazenod this Friday night under lights at VAFA HQs – Elsternwick Park from 6:40pm. Last time these two teams met at the same venue, it was the Rovers winning by 33 points.
The Hampton Rovers are well known for having one of the largest supporter bases in the VAFA and all supporters are urged to get along to both games to support the mighty green and gold.
