VAFA defeat SFL in thriller

The VAFA has proved its dominance over the Southern Football League with another win on Saturday in the 2006 Representative Game. Although this year’s result was much closer than in previous with the VAFA winning by 5 points after kicking a goal with seconds remaining.

The Southern Football League has never defeated the VAFA since the Cystic Fibrosis Cup was introduced six years back.

In an exciting finish to a fantastic game of Representative Football, the VAFA’s Vice-Captain Al McQueen-Parton marked in the goal square with only seconds remaining on the clock and goaled to secure the VAFA’s 6th straight victory over the Southern Football League.

The SFL took it up to the VAFA right from the start and has 3 goals on the board before the VAFA managed to score their first through a Peter Harrison snap. The SFL were playing with exceptional intensity and the Vics were struggling to get their running game going. When they were able to break free, the Vics played an enjoyable brand of football and went into quarter time with a slender lead.

The game went along in a similar vein in the second quarter with the SFL’s intensity showing and helping them to a 3 points lead at half time. Both sides went goal for goal in the third quarter until late when the SFL were able to break away slightly. Their lead got out to 15 points until a late goal to the VAFA had them down by 9 points at three quarter time.

The SFL had the better of things early in the final term and look every bit the winning side getting out to a three goal lead midway through the final term. Then, in a dramatic turn around, the VAFA piled on the next three goals through Mitchell, Taft and Davis to bring the margin back to 1 point with little time left on the clock.

After an exciting minute with the ball travelling between half back lines, David Boundy managed to grab the ball out of a contest and get it forward where McQueen-Parton become the hero of the match with a strong mark. The siren was to sound at the ensuing bounce with the VAFA home by 5 points. Final score VAFA 13.8.86 defeated SFL 12.9.81.
