Thirds defeat Marcellin for second win

At the start of the season, the Club looked to improve quality of football by entering a team in the Premier C Thirds competition.

This has proved to be a good decision with many players from the thirds being promoted to the seconds – this week alone there were Mat Broadly, Jack Lloyd, Matt Ryan and Lachie Delisle.

Despite these players not being available, the Thirds had their second win for the year! It was made difficult as it did clash with some other game that was happening in Brazil!!!!

Handy additions to the team included Club stalwart and legend Uncle Mick Flahive and the B&F from 2012 and 2013 from the Reserves, Liam Woodland.

The early kick off and the soccer world cup meant that Marcellin had a few players short at the start of the game and our generous coach Seb Wright allowed a late start to give the opposition time to find a team.

With dew on the ground and fog apparent the first half was a scrappy affair where we hit the post 3 times. In a low scoring match this could have decided the match. Fortunately, after half time we settled down to play some good football and gradually pulled away from the opposition.

Mick Flahive provided a great target at full forward but no doubt distracted by the upcoming Premiership reunions, he just couldn’t convert and kicked 5 behinds for the day. That aside, his influence on the team was immeasurable. A great return! Jack Massie racked up possessions and with Liam Woodland, Jay Coverdale and Vinnie Camera controlling the centre, the result was never in doubt.

It was great to see the coach’s brother Will Wright (another set of brothers at the Rovers) who rucked tirelessly all day after Michael Lake was forced off the ground with that injury of the aged – a crook hammy!

A great defensive effort by Coach Seb Wright with his back six which included Liam Dynon, Will Lingard, Rabbit Warren and Zac Cochrane they kept the opposition goalless in the last three quarters!
