Thirds notch up first win

The Hampton Rovers Thirds had their first win for the season on the weekend beating Kew at the home of the Rovers.

In what was expected to be wet conditions due to the overnight rain, the Boss James Reserve held up well and was able to produce some dry footy with the Rovers getting off to a commanding yet inaccurate start kicking 5-7 to 1-1 which was to be close to the final margin. The 2nd and 3rd quarters were extremely even with both teams going goal for goal and both teams ruing missed chances.

Kew threw everything at the Rovers in the last quarter pumping the ball into their forward line continuously, but the determined Rovers backline kept repelling the attacks while also giving the forwards a chance to kick a couple and seal the win.

Stevie Howe dominated the first quarter to help set up the win, while Steve Anderson showed that at 35 he’s still got a bit left in him. Mike Lake was his usual aggressive self which had Kew unnerved and concentrating on things other than football. Andy McLorinan backed up his 4 goals from the previous game with another couple.

But it was an overall team effort with every single player contributing consistently throughout the game…even super coach Glenn ‘Gladys’ Roulent was showing the young fella’s how to do it by taking a couple of grabs on the wing.

The win was even more meritorious considering the fact the Rovers started with only 20 players and played the last quarter and a half with only 18 men.
