President’s Update – June 3

We find ourselves in lockdown again and hopefully by June 10, we are on the way out and we can return to our normal way of life and see the return of community football.

Melbourne’s lockdown has meant rounds 8 and 9 are cancelled (a home game against Marcellin and an away game at Como Park v Old Geelong). In line with the VAFA Covid Policy, these games won’t be rescheduled to a later date. Next up, there is a bye for the long weekend and we’re scheduled to host Mazenod at the Boss on June 19.

It is incumbent on us all to do the right thing and I wish you all the best. Stay safe, keep active and avoid those exposure sites!

Our season to date has been largely successful, a few ups and downs, some unfortunate injuries, but overall very positive.

Seniors are 4th on the ladder with 4 wins and 3 losses, having lost the last 2 games, we face a crucial game at the Boss on June 19th against Mazenod who defeated us on May 22 – they also have a 4 win 3 loss record.

Reserves are 7th with 3 wins and 4 losses and play Mazenod next up who are 5th.

Thirds are 3rd with 5-2 win loss and play Old Brighton (7th), who we defeated in the last game) away on May 22, with a twilight game starting at 4.45pm.

Under 19s are 2nd with 5-2 win loss and play Parkdale Vultures next, away.

Women are on top of the ladder with a 6-1 win loss record and play South Melbourne Districts away next up. Our only ‘loss’ was a forfeit due to a lack of players, so if you know anyone who is keen to play, let me know.

We now enter the second half of the season, and it is vital we stay committed and enthusiastic and continue to chalk up those victories.

Off the field, I would like to thank our sponsors and members who have so generously signed up and shown great support. We’re now up to 144 Club Members in 2021 which is simply amazing! If you’re not signed up, please help us reach our target of 150.

Our Women’s Luncheon was a particular highlight as we raised a total of $2,228 for Breast Cancer Network Australia, hearty congratulations to our women’s team who did a great job on the day organising raffles, a live performance by Joel Bowditch, and of course Bianca interviewing Frances Della Bosca.

We have a big function coming up on Sunday July 4 which is an important fundraiser for the club – $2K Day. You can purchase a ticket for $50 which includes drinks, lunch, live band and a chance to win $2,000.

There are a lot of good things happening at the Rovers, let’s get over this lockdown, regroup and make a charge to the finals.

Stay healthy, look out for each other see you all soon.

Gary Nash
Senior President
