Hampton Rovers Football Club has announced Andrew McGregor as coach of the newly re-established Thirds team in 2018.
Meanwhile, the VAFA has released the fixture with the Rovers competing in Section 5, kicking-off the new season against Swinburn University on Saturday morning in Hawthorn.
The McGregor name is closely linked with the club and Andrew himself played over 200 games at the Rovers, coached the Reserves for two seasons in the 1990’s and was the inaugural Rovers Thirds coach back in 2002.
With the club fielding one Under 19 team this year after having two in 2017, there will be a heavy emphasis of mixing excess U19 players into the Thirds with U19 coach Lou Folino and Reserves coach Anton Duddy giving Andrew direction. This will ensure there is a strong connection between all four senior men’s teams.
Andrew, or “Egger” known to by many, is looking forward to the season ahead and being involved back at the club,
“I’m looking forward to working with the young group of guys and showing them the long-term friendships you can make within the amateurs.”
The Rovers last fielded a Thirds team in 2015 and this will be the eighth year the club has fielded a team. There has been strong interest from wide and far but registrations remain open and we encourage players to sign up now – if you can play the entire season or only some games. Players are welcome along to join in senior training on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s 6pm at Boss James Reserve.
The club is also after some assistance to help Andrew out on match day – such as assistant coach, team manager, water carrier etc – again, either for the whole season on only a few games – any help would be appreciated. Andrew can be contacted on 0404 094 367. Or join the Thirds Facebook Group.
