Hampton Rovers junior teams joined 4,000 teenagers in wearing orange socks on Sunday to support Will Murray.
Members of grassroots football, netball and basketball clubs across Melbourne have snapped up the socks, which were sold for $10 a pair. The profits will go directly towards Will’s care and rehabilitation.
The Orange Sock Day was organised by family friend Greg Miller, who says orange is Will’s favourite colour, making it a natural choice for the Sock Day fundraiser.
“Across the weekend, 80 per cent of teams in the SMJFL will wear the socks, plus all teams in the Sabres basketball club and a raft of local Bayside netball clubs as well,” he said.
The 14-year-old was a talented junior sports star before he suffered a serious neck injury when diving off a pier in January 2016. His family now faces up to $300,000 a year in costs to cover his care and rehabilitation, none of which is covered by insurance.
The Orange Sock Day is sponsored by Hampton Rovers and East Sandringham major sponsor – Buxton.
