From the President – June 5

As Covid-19 restrictions continue to ease, we look forward to seeing the resumption of club-sanctioned training following the long weekend.

Last weekend, the VAFA gave approval for its clubs to begin to train in small groups of 20 provided the club, coaches, support volunteers and players adhere to strict protocols. The club has been working with the Bayside City Council to gain access to grounds and we now have some clarity around this. The club will have access to Castlefield Reserve and Peterson Reserve Oval 2 from Monday, and now expect to have access to Boss James Reserve from Wednesday (June 10).

The club has been in constant dialog with the VAFA and taking all precautions to ensure we provide a safe environment for everyone. All coaches and officials involved in training are completing the Federal Government Infection Control Training Program, while all players are required to register, read and acknowledge they understand the various protocols prior to participating in training [more info for players here].

The VAFA Board met on Wednesday evening and set a potential season-start date of July 25 – if given approval in line with Government restrictions and assuming a number of matters are satisfied, including confirmation of return-to-play protocols, insurance cost and coverage and confirmation of crowd numbers and safety protocols.

SALVO’S RED SHIELD APPEAL
It isn’t too late to donate to the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal. Taking it online this year has made it more difficult than usual to receive donations. So far, the club has raised over $2,000, however we want to see that figure increase. While the Red Shield Appeal was last weekend, you can continue to donate during June – see more details and donate here.

ROVERLAND PODCAST
Last week, the boys interviewed Will Walker and if you haven’t listened to it already, make sure you do! He speaks about his journey to playing AFL footy at North Melbourne, his involvement as assistant coach of the premiership-winning Rovers U19s last year, and plenty more. This week, the boys catch up with one of the stars of our senior women’s team – Bianca Lenarcic. Keep an eye out for that one and catch all the episodes here.

ROVERS RAFFLE
The weekly online Rovers Raffle’s continue and I thank everyone for their ongoing support. For next week’s raffle, we’ll be donating half of the proceeds to the Salvo’s Red Shield Appeal so please make sure you buy some tickets. We are also auctioning off a signed Essendon jumper by Tim & Jobe Watson (with the proceeds to be split between the club and Salvo’s) – you can bid by emailing joel.emmins22@gmail.com and there will be live bids on Thursday evening from 8pm via the Rovers Raffle Facebook Group.
