Vale: Alan Hayes

Hampton Rovers past player Alan (Chesty) Hayes passed away on January 30, 2019.

Alan played with the Scouts/Rovers prior to being picked up by Richmond. He played 23 games with the Tigers in 1959-1962. He later went on and played many years with both Hastings and Mornington.

A touching obituary in the Herald Sun on February 1st was from his mate Barry Cameron.

Barry also played with the Scouts/Rovers and was also picked up by Richmond and played 96 games in 1959-1966.

During the period of the late 50’s and early 60’s, the Hampton Rovers must have been in Richmond’s recruiting zone as Larry Rowe [dec] was also taken in 1958 and achieved 20 games in 1958-1961.

Other Scouts/Rovers taken by the VFL during this period were:

John Kelton – 21 games with South Melbourne in 1957-1960, and

Ross Smith – 234 games with St Kilda in 1961-1975 and Brownlow Medallist.

Alan’s funeral will be held at Tobin Bros. Mt Martha, 11am Thursday February 7th.
