Two in a row for the Rovers Women now, who outplayed and out-slayed Therry Penola at their ground this weekend. In a great four quarter effort, every woman on the ground had the back of another, and a sturdy arm across someone else.
Forget the Donald Trump Wall, it’s the Hampton Rovers Women’s Wall brilliantly led by one of our Super Mums, Megan Temple, who took mark after mark and repelled the ball back into the forward line leading to a best on ground performance.
The girls have found another marking forward in Sonja Mihelyi, who led hard all day and reaped the rewards with 2 of Hamptons 3 goals. With Gabby Samkova at her feet all day, she too, was close numerous times to adding her name to the goal kickers list. Special mention also goes to everyone’s favourite pocket rocket, Katie Grace, who kicked a goal that made supporters break the sound barrier.
Crystal Moon proved a rock in the backline once again, with plenty of spoils and rebounding dash from her opponent. Her partner in crime at CHB Sarah Cleary read the ball beautifully all day and may have found her favourite position on the ground. While Mandy Naylor was true to her name and put fear into her opponents with ferocious attack on the ball from half back.
The midfield brigade ran hard all day, with handy running inclusions of Eli Godden and Casey Politarhis, all benefitted from the ruck work of stand in Zara Phillips and stand in captain Bianca Lenarcic! Would you believe that we have now lost both of our joint captains to injury? Lucy Timmons couldn’t take the field as a result of that big hit she took last week – she actually damaged an eardrum!
We can’t wait to hit the ground running against Ajax at Home next week and continue our march to Rover’s glory. #playlikeagirl
This week’s round five match against Ajax will be played on Sunday at Castlefield Reserve, Ludstone Street, commencing at 3:30pm. Get along and cheer on the girls!

It was great to see how well our hosts, Therry Penola, looked after the team on the day which extended to a softie and a snag after the game! We’ll have to reciprocate. It was a visit to the 70s when the home team coach congratulated us on the win prior to extending the invitation to come back for a drink. Credit to Therry. Also great to see the support from the senior players for the women on game day. Women’s footy is alive and well!
Meanwhile, the VAFA has released the fixture for the remainder of the season (view here) however please note all home game dates & times are subject to change due to clashes with other fixtures. We expect some to be moved to Friday nights at Boss James Reserve. Fixtures will be confirmed as early as possible.
