Rovers ready for Round 1

It was a big night at Boss James Thursday evening for the first selection night of the year and all five senior sides are raring to go for the weekend as the 2017 VAFA season kicks-off.

There’s always a buzz around the club at the final training session before the season opener, but even more so this year with two additional teams including the inaugural senior women’s side. Plenty of foot traffic on the vast expanses of Boss James Reserve and over 130 players and supporters in the rooms following.

The Seniors return to Premier C in 2017 following two seasons in B and face Kew AFC away at Victoria Park, High Street, Kew. It’s the first time the two clubs have met in a very long time and the Rovers will be looking to get their campaign off to the perfect start. A good side has been picked and the boys are itching to go.

Seniors kick-off at 2pm with the Reserves at 11:40am. We encourage all supporters to get along and show their support for the players, new captain Christian Carnovale and new coach Daniel Hughes. The club is a little light on for help and we’re still on the lookout for a team manager, runner and timekeeper for the seniors and timekeeper for the reserves. If you can help this or other weeks, please speak with President Steve Anderson or contact the club.

This year, the Rovers are fielding two Under 19 sides due to big numbers across the younger age group. John Cesario’s side faces Old Ivanhoe at Boss James Reserve commencing at 2pm and the second U19 team coached by Sam Care travels to Aquinas starting at 9:20am. View fixtures >

Most of the attention for round one has been taken by the women! In 2017, the VAFA becomes the largest women’s football competition in Australia with 40 teams and the Hampton Rovers Football Club has the honour of hosting the first ever game for premiership points. The Rovers host Ormond Friday night at Boss James Reserve, commencing at 7:40pm.

It promises to be a huge night at the Boss and a large crowd is expected. There is a pre-game function commencing at 6:30pm (bar open from 6pm) featuring a number of special guests including Bulldogs AFLW player Lauren Morecroft. Just $30 for a sit-down dinner with drinks available at bar prices – limited seats remaining – click here for details.

The club encourages everyone to get along and be part of history this Friday night!
