Rovers Women’s team set to fly

A Hampton Rovers Football Club senior women’s team in the new 2017 VAFA competition will become a reality following a successful info night during the week, while two AFLW players will help the club on its journey after being announced as ambassadors of Rovers women’s footy.

The Rovers Women’s team has attracted huge interest since the announcement, setting records on the Rovers website and social media, and Wednesday’s information night followed that trend, with over 30 players in attendance all keen to be a part of the inaugural team in 2017.

They were presented with information about the club and the new competition, which is set to kick-off in April. While many details are yet to be confirmed, it’s expected games will be played on Sunday afternoons and the divisions will be set by geographic locations with the Rovers participating in the South competition. Players must be at least 16 years of age as of 1st January 2017 and one of the main drivers of the competition is participating – meaning no previous footy experience is required.

The club expects even more girls to register their interest – you can do so by filling out the form at www.hamptonrovers.com.au/womens

Pre-season training sessions will be scheduled for November giving girls the opportunity to have a kick – details of these will be confirmed in the near future.

The club is thrilled to have two stars of AFL Women’s footy on board as ambassadors of the Hampton Rovers Women’s team. New Collingwood recruit and Western Bulldogs captain of the past few years, Stephanie Chiocci and new Western Bulldogs Lauren Morecroft will help promote the new team, attend training sessions and events. Both have connections with the club and we’re thrilled to have them on board. Both players were selected in the inaugural AFL Women’s Draft with Steph picked up by the Magpies at pick 11 and Lauren by the Bulldogs at pick 101. The new AFLW competition kicks-off in February 2017 and the club wishes both players the best of luck.

The search is now on for a Women’s team coach and the club is now accepting applications. It’s a huge growth area for the sport and an exciting opportunity. If you’re interested, please email womensfooty@hamptonrovers.com.au or click here for more info.

As well as an abundance of players, the new Women’s team already has a team manager and two sponsors locked in. As well as a coach, we’ll also need additional officials and helpers to make the new team a success. Please register your interest here.

It’s not just at a senior level where there’s activity on a female playing front – in 2017 the junior section of the Hampton Rovers Football Club will field up to four girl’s teams (U10, U12, U14, U16). An information evening will be held on Wednesday 26th October 6:30pm at Boss James Reserve and we welcome everyone interested to come along.

This is an exciting new era for the Hampton Rovers Football Club and Australian Football in general, and we look forward as the momentum builds to 2017.
