Opening Day: Rovers host Parkdale

Footy’s back! Round one of the 2016 VAFA season is here and the Rovers host Parkdale Vultures at Boss James Reserve on Saturday to kick things off with a bang.

The off-season has seen the boys work hard and there have been plenty of positive signs especially in the past few weeks. It’ll be a new-look Rovers side come Saturday with four senior debutants and plenty of youth amongst the seasoned campaigners.

Hampton and Parkdale closed out the home and away season last year and there are some seven changes to the Rovers side from that day. New senior coach Owen Lalor is raring to go as his rivalry with opposing coach, mate and work colleague, Sam Radford continues.

Saturday’s round one clash is the first of many local derbies in 2016 with Premier B section featuring a number of bayside clubs. Beaumaris and Old Haileybury enter the second-top division, joining Old Brighton, St Bedes/Mentone and the two teams facing-off at the Boss.

The club encourages everyone to get along to Boss James Reserve for the season-opener and show your support as the new season gets underway. Weather conditions are looking near-perfect and it promises to be a great day.

It’s a big triple-header with the Under 19s kicking-off the action at 9:20am against arch-rivals Ormond, followed by the Reserves against the Vultures at 11:40am, and the main game commencing at 2:00pm.

Get in quick and book a spot at the first Home Game Luncheon of 2016. Numbers are looking strong and the first of the year is always one of the best with an air of excitement amongst supporters. Hear from new President Steve Anderson and enjoy the best feed in the Ammo’s! Commencing at midday, the cost is just $30 per head and bookings are essential – contact Gary Nash on gnash@jte.com.au or sms/call 0407 313 054 (by midday Friday to secure your spot).

After the game, we welcome everyone back into the Wright-Scarlett Pavilion where the bar will be open, footy on TV, and match presentations at around 5:30pm. We look forward to seeing everyone at the game on Saturday!
