Robbins a Rover

With sights firmly on Premier B finals in 2015 and a subsequent berth into Premier section, the Hampton Rovers have added to their already strong goal kicking power with the signing of former Western Bulldogs and Geelong star Matty Robbins.

Robbins’ AFL career with the Cats and the Dogs spanned 12 season from 1996-2007, culminating in 146 games and 135 goals.

It is a return to the Rovers for Robbins, who coached the club in 2010. Since that time he has played with Ormond, Hastings and Meenyan.

Rovers’ coach Guy Martyn is excited about the opportunity of adding Robbins’ strong body and football smarts to the team’s line up.

“Matty is a really smart footballer. He is rarely beaten in a one on one contest, and reads the ball really well right across the ground. He will give us another option up forward and is also able to drop back to fill a hole if and when required” Martyn said.

Robbins is equally excited about the Rovers’ prospects in 2015.

“I played in the 2013 Grand Final against the Rovers, and I knew from the talent on display that day that the Rovers were on a serious march up the grades of the VAFA competition. I am the fittest I have been for a few years, and really excited about contributing in a big season for the Rovers” Robbins said.

Training has been underway for the past three weeks, with solid numbers at each session. Training is held at 6pm on Monday’s meeting at St James College (Bignell Rd, East Bentleigh) and Wednesday’s at Boss James Reserve (David St, Hampton).
