Hampton Rovers lost their first game of the 2013 season on Saturday, going down to Williamstown CYMS by 14 points in atrocious conditions at Fearon Reserve.
It took a practically unplayable ground for the Rovers to drop their first four points of the season with conditions a stark contrast to those in round four when Hampton ran out 110-victors at Boss James Reserve.
The home side managed three goals in the opening term and that proved the difference on the day. From that point on it was an even affair in the mud. After quarter time, the Rovers actually outscored the CYs 27 to 24.
The third term only saw one score a behind to the Rovers. Williamstown only kicked one goal in the second half while Hampton kicked two but left their run too late. The loss means the Rovers lead on top of the ladder has been cut to three games clear.
Congratulations to Stuart Burggraaff who played his 200th senior game for the Rovers and to Nick Lyall on playing his 200th club game.
As always the Rovers had terrific away support and that was boosted on Saturday by the Ladies Bus which had around 20 Ladies Members on board and despite the conditions, had a great day out.
The Rovers will look forward to returning to Boss James Reserve this Saturday when they host Old Mentonians. Several key players are also expected to make their return. The day will feature the 2013 Ovarian Cancer Australia luncheon with guest speaker Nicole Livingstone and followed by the Rovers $1,000 Draw & Auction Night commencing at 7pm.
