The Hampton Rovers Under 19s hosted Powerhouse/South Mornington coming off their first win of the season at The Boss on Saturday.
Kicking with a 2 goal wind, the visitors were harder at the ball and played a physical 1st quarter, kicking 2 goals with half back Rory White kicking the only Rovers goal.
A simple message by coach Cameron McGregor to stick with the Rovers game plan and attack the clubrooms side, saw the Rovers football ability start to dominate. The intensity at the ball increased and slowly but surely the home side edged away.
The Rovers had the Parents down for a Luncheon at half time and they liked what they saw, a dedicated group came out after the main break and really played well. After 2 consecutive 20 goal defeats, the boys wanted to get one back.
They ran hard, both into defence and attack and went into three quarter time leading by 7 goals. An exchange of words led to a Dermie style attack on our huddle by a frustrated Powerhouse/South Mornington player which in turn, fired our boys up.
The fire in the belly and some strict instructions to concentrate on winning the ball led to a dominant last quarter with the Rovers piling on 10 goals.
Under 16 players Max Greenway made a solid debut as did Brad Trembath backing up from his top performance last week. Ably led by skipper Lee Smith, best players were hard to pick, as the Rovers had winners all over the ground. Nick Lyall continued his brilliant season as did Kyle Pinto chiming in for 4 goals. Schafer up forward was a welcome relief kicking 4 himself as did Rory White. Alex Ross continues to impress whilst dashing HBF Jason “Deledio” McCoy put in his best performance for the year.
With players such as Danny Young, Matt Curry, Spike Davis and James Marasco continuing to improve, the run home looks very promising. This 108 point win puts the Rovers in 5th position on the ladder, with no chance of playing finals, we need to aim to hold this spot and finish strongly.
