Rovers win local thriller

On Saturday at Boss James Reserve, David Street, the Rovers scraped home by one point to win the local derby against St.Bedes Mentone.

The game commenced at a frantic pace as the St.Bedes centres blitzed the stunned Rovers brigade to lead by 13 points at the first break. St.Bedes and former Rovers coach Russel Barnes had his boys on fire and was seemingly headed for an upset. However, from the second quarter the Rovers regrouped and had regained a 20 point lead by the long break mainly due to their strong tackling and Anthony Browne‘s superior ruckwork.

Rover onballers Tim Willmot,Denver Artz and Campell McKellar continued to cut up the opposition throughout the second half finishing with a staggering combined 100 possessions.

The last quarter was fought out to the last minute with the lead changing on several occasions and the siren sounding as St.Bedes were relentlessly attacking and peppering their forwards, couragious saves by Rovers Wilmott and Michael Davey had all present applauding their efforts.

After the game Rovers coach Norm Goss said “It was a memorable victory for the boys, playing without their Captain Michael Fletcher who was sidelined in the first 10 minutes and after a see-sawing battle it was exciting to see that our younger players in Nick Greenwood, Leigh Fletcher and Damian Rayson stood up to the pressure and contributed to the win”.

Next weeks game is against Old Brighton Grammarians at the Brighton Beach Oval in another big local derby, after the Rovers victory at this venue last year to avoid relegation the Old Boys will surely be out for revenge.

GOALS: Power 3, Artz, M.McKellar, S.Anderson, Browne, L.Fletcher, Greenwood, Rayson.

BEST: Wilmott, Artz, C.McKellar, Browne, Duddy, Greenwood.
