U19s put Scotch to the sword

What a beautiful day for football at the Boss on Saturday!

May Day saw us up against Old Scotch who are currently holding up the Div 2 ladder. We had made a few changes going into this game giving a few players their first run in the U19’s and we saw our Captain Liam O’Driscoll elevated to the 1’s for this round (well deserved after a huge preseason and really good opening game performances). Well done Liam.

The first term saw the Rovers jump out of the blocks against the breeze to the far end of the Boss, with Joey Wilson kicking what would be his first of 4 for the day. He enjoyed getting to have a run in the forward line for a change. This goal was shortly followed by a quick goal by Will Kervin, followed by Joey’s 2nd. The opposition showed a little bit of structure and willingness early but this didn’t last long and at the end of the first quarter it was 3/2/20 to zero as Old Scotch had been unable to mount an attack successfully.

The second term didn’t get any better for Old Scotch who still failed to score, our defence was too strong for them. Zach Mackay, Cam Carmeni and a very tanned Micheal Garbelotto upon his return from holidays did not let anything get past them. As far as the score line was going the Rovers put another 3 goals on the board now going with the breeze. Majors from Ben Marron (his first of 5 for the day), Max Leaver, on debut and Campbell Bennett, also on debut kicking one each but it should have been many, many more with 9 points kicked this term as well! Half time scores were 6/11/47 to zero.

The third term gave Old scotch another chance to try and score with the breeze but unfortunately for them they were not kicking straight and only landed 3 points. The Rovers however, having started to give more players a go in the forward line, put on 4 more goals with 1 each this term to Tom Goldsmith, Joey Wilson, Seb DeWolf and Ben Crothers as they continued on their merry way. 3QT scores 10/15/75 to 0/3/3.

The final quarter opened as the first one started with Joey Wilson kicking our first goal. Ben Marron was thrown forward to have a rest as he had been going hard in the midfield all day. After kicking 1 goal 4 points to this stage in the game, Ben then went onto kick 4 goals this term and Seb DeWolf also added his 2nd. Taking us to a 100 point win! Final scores16/20/116 to 2/4/16.

This win puts us into 2nd place on the ladder behind next week’s opponents Kew. We are expecting a much tougher game next week so rest up boys ready for a big week preparing for the next challenge.

Thanks to our volunteers who helped out on the day, Boundary Umpire – Phil Crothers, time keeper and scoreboard – Gavin Sharp & Jason Cave, Runner – Flyn Lohan. Thanks also to Cailey King for her assistance.

Great to see so many people coming down to watch our home games and the thirds, spread the word, it is a great day out.
