Boss James Reserve plays host to the first of three big local derbys for the 2006 season as two of the VAFAs biggest district clubs go head-to-head when Ormond visits the Rovers. A big crowd is expected at
The Rovers are high on confidence following on from their first win of the season in last Saturdays 50-point thrashing over the Monash Blues, while Ormond are flying with 3 straight wins and sitting 2nd on the ladder.
District clubs used to one day dominate the VAFA, however in the last decade, this has somewhat diminished. Ormond, once a VAFA powerhouse, fell to D1 section for the 2004 season, the same year the Rovers were the highest district club in the competition, in B Section.
Ormond reached the Grand Final in 2005 to get promoted to C section for 2006, while the Rovers and Parkdale are the only other two district clubs in the section. The only other district club higher in the VAFA is Beaumaris, who were promoted to B section for the 2006 season and are currently sitting at the bottom of the ladder.
Hopefully the near future will see the revival of the district clubs, and one thing that is crucial to this is forming relationships with local schools. While the schoolboy clubs receive a yearly intake from their respective schools, its a much harder process for the district clubs, and made even harder when the schoolboy sides take back players who have played junior football at the district clubs.
All is set for an entertaining battle and the
The Presidents Luncheon at the first home game was a big hit with new caterers in charge in 2006, and with a different menu each week, all are set to be just as popular. This weeks menu is a rack of lamb with chasseur sauce, mashed garlic potatoes and seasonal vegetables, salad, rolls and cheese, all for just $20.
So make sure you get along to Boss James Reserve this Saturday to see this big local derby between two great district clubs. A big crowd is expected so come along for a great day!
