Rovers go down in opening round

The Hampton Rovers were outrun by St.Bedes Mentone Tigers in round 1 of the 2006 season away on Saturday. It was a tough opening round for the green and gold’s coming up against who many are calling 2006 flag favourites, however with some big names to return, things can only go up from here.

The home team, who play their ever so small home ground so well, moved the ball around quickly to record comprehensive victories in both the seniors and reserves matches.

The Rovers kicked the opening major of the game and kept within reach during the opening half, however the Tigers kicked away in the second half to take the game.

Alex Crisp, Anthony Browne and Nick Greenwood all played well for the Rovers while multiple goalkickers were Greenwood and Greg Cannell.

Hampton welcomed Adrian Byrt playing his first game for the club and Jeremy Yelland playing his first senior game. The Rovers will see the return of the likes of Heath Tregear, Gary Carr and Daniel Andersen in the coming weeks to bolster their attack.

The Reserves went down by a similar margin as the one’s with David Anderson, Wheeler and McKeon playing well while Paul Adams and Christiansen were the only goalkickers.

The Hampton Rovers play their first home game of the season next Saturday as they take on North Old Boys at Boss James Reserve. Make sure you get along for the Rovers first home appearance and don?t forget to book your spot at the Luncheon.

The Under 19’s put in a good performance against De La Salle but went down by 10 points at home. Kyle Pinto, Lee Smith, Batt, Morecroft, Mitchell Smith and Dwyer were best on the ground for the Rovers while Chris Gleeson lead the way up front kicking 4 goals.
