A big milestone takes place at Boss James Reserve this Saturday as Matthew McKellar plays his 300th VAFA game. The former captain has been recalled to the seniors for the clash against Monash Blues.
Matthew ?The Kid? McKellar first played for the Rovers in 1979, the year the juniors were formed. He won the U17 Best & Fairest in 1985 and was runners up in 1980 for U11’s and 1981 for U13’s. After playing 107 games in the juniors, Matthew moved in to the senior ranks playing his first game in the ones as a 15 year old. He won a senior Best & Fairest in 1992 and was also an Under 19s VAFA state representative player. In 1995 he was a member of the premiership team that broke the big drought.
The kid was honoured with being named club Captain from 1997 to 1999 including the highest honour of being captain of the 1998 Premiership Team. Matthew has continued to play on even though he has being plagued with injuries.
Matthew has played 405 games for the Hampton Rovers and on Saturday plays his 300th VAFA game in the seniors, which is a fitting tribute to him. All at Hampton Rovers AFC congratulate Matthew on this outstanding achievement.
