Rovers comfortably over Saints

An awesome seven-goal blitz in the final 10 minutes saw Hampton Rovers run out comfortable winners over cellar-dwellers Glen Eira in their C Grade clash at Packer Reserve on Saturday.

The Saints won the toss and kicked with the aid of a 6 goal wind.  But the Rovers started superbly and kept the home team goal-less while kicking four goals themselves.  Rovers’ mid fielder Stuart Burgraff provided plenty of drive, while talls Michael Fletcher and James Hanlon dominated.  At quarter time, the green and gold led 4.1.25 to 0.5.5.

After their disappointing start, Glen Eira bounced back well in the second quarter and kicked four goals.  The Rovers also kicked four with State representative Gary Carr gaining possessions all over the ground.  At half time the Rovers led 8.7.55 to 4.6.30.

The game tightened up in the third quarter.  Youngster Danny Hughes playing his second Senior game for the Rovers was everywhere and at the final break they led by fifteen points.

Both teams went goal for goal in the first part of the final stanza and an upset result was not out of the question.  But the Rovers wanted this one and lifted to kick nine goals and run out comfortable winners 18.15.123 to Glen Eira 9.12.66.

While the Rovers are out of the four, the win keeps them in the hunt for a finals position. Rovers face Monash Blues in a vital match next Saturday at Boss James Reserve.

Goalkickers for the Rovers were Carr 4, Devereaux 4, Greenwood 2, Hughes 2, Lawrence 2, Andersen, Fletcher, Hanlon and Spratt one each.

Best for the Rovers were Fletcher, Hughes, Hanlon, Greenwood, Lawrence and Carr.

The Rovers Reserves won 11.13.79 to Glen Eira 8.5.53 to maintain second spot on the ladder.  While the Rovers under 19’s battled hard but Mazenod proved too strong in their game. Click here for full match details.
