Rovers soar over Saints

Hampton Rovers had a convincing 67-point win over Glen Eira in wet conditions at Boss James Reserve on Saturday.

The first quarter of the match was even as players of both teams endured the wettest conditions they had encountered so far this season.  At the first break the difference was a point in favour of the visitors but it had been a reasonable performance by the Rovers as they had kicked against a three goal breeze.

The second quarter was a different story as the Rovers talls Browne and Greenwood took over in the rucks and the runners Carr, Lawrence and Daniel Andersen dominated.  At the main break the Rovers were in front 5.7.37 to 2.5.17.

The Rovers came out strongly in the third quarter and put the match beyond doubt with some very good football.  Rovers players were winning all over the ground, goals to Greenwood, Denver Artz and Steve Anderson saw the home team take a 41 point lead into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter was a repeat of the third as the Rovers dominance on the game continued. Four more goals in the quarter saw Rovers win 13.10.88 to 2.9.21.

Best for the Rovers were Denver Artz, Barker, Carr, Greenwoood, S Anderson and Browne. Power lead the goalkickers with 4 goals.

After the game, Rovers coach Brett McIlwraith said, “I was very pleased with this win and the boys came back hard after last week’s game.  Without exception all the lads played to the rules they set themselves during the week.  A very satisfying win.”

The Rovers reserves had a thumping win over the Saints and won 13.9.87 to 1.3.9.  Prantzos, Quon, Terech and Hanlon were best on ground for the Rovers. This was the third consecutive win for the Reserves and all have been by big margins.

Meanwhile the Rovers Under 19’s had their first win of the year by defeating Mazenod 13.17.95 to 8.11.59. Gary Giasoumi kicked 3, while Robert Kenny was best on ground for the Rovers.
