Under 14: 1st Semi Final v Dingley

Tom Buntz’s Under 14 side played the first semi-final against Dingley at Dingley last Sunday. The team beat Dingley twice during the home and away season which gave the players great confidence they could win the match even though injury and illness had depleted the side.

Tom Curry, our captain, won the toss and elected to kick with the strong breeze that was blowing at Souter reserve. The guys wasted many opportunities to goal, but the signs were there that they had come to play by kicking 1.4 to 0.0.

At quarter time Tom Buntz instructed the team on how to play into the wind, the guys followed his directions and at half time they had increased their lead and importantly kept Dingley to only 1 goal.

The third and fourth quarters saw the Rovers dominance increase until they were 8 goals ahead at one stage. Several late goals to Dingley after the sting was out of the game gave their score line some respectability.

Final score: 10.12.72 to 6.6.42

Goal scorers: Cann 3, Wynne 2, Rudd 2, Curry 1, Buntz 1, McKell 1.

Better players: Daniel Sargent, Tom Curry, Nick Wynne, Alex Cann, Kelvin Rudd and Hayden Batt with special mention to Steve Johnson who got out of his sick bed on a wet, windy and cold morning to help out his team mates.

Under 14 South advances to the Preliminary Final this Sunday, 3:00pm at the Mentone Grammar Playing Fields, Keysborough.

Under 11 South: Preliminary Final v Dingley

Hampton Rovers Under 11 South 4-6-30 defeated Dingley 1-4-10. Our six Captains called heads, won the toss and kicked with the wind. The young footballers switched on immediately to an aggressive style of play in wet, windy and slippery conditions Knowing that they had to use the advantage of the wind, Ben, Anthony G (1 goal), Michael (1 goal), Alex H (1 goal), Marcus, Louis, Tom, Tim and Terry produced strength, speed and smart football to create three goals in the first quarter.

Determination and a great defence led by our 50 gamer Anthony H, Will, Corey, Sebastian, Sam C, Sam R and Nick repelled constant attacks for the next two quarters. Our continual tremendous tackling led by Alex W, Jamie, Lochlan, Jackson, Jono, Gavin and a last quarter goal by a tenacious Darcy saw the opposition timid most of the time.

This is the style of committed football we have to take with us into the next game, and remember don’t STOP until the siren sounds.

The Under 11 South team plays in the Grand Final at 8:45am this Sunday at the Mentone Grammar Playing Fields, Keysborough.
