Rovers go missing in final quarter

Playing their last home game for the season on Saturday, the Rovers looked set to down Old Paradians as they led by 9 points going into the last quarter.

The Rovers small brigade had shown the opposition how to attack the ball for a clear 3 quarters and with the wind dying in the last quarter and urged on by the parochial crowd, a Rovers victory seemed more than apparent. Alas, and to coach Norm Goss’s constant warnings, the boys from David Street again went missing.

The final quarter saw the more desperate Old Paradians kick 9 goals to the Rovers 1, dejavu from last weeks 1st quarter effort against Mazenod. For the Rovers their onballers in the Artz brothers, young Daniel Andersen and captain “Chief” Fletcher were relentless all day in trying to drive the Rovers to victory. Ben Artz’s efforts in snaring a worthy 4 goals and his willingness to put his body on the line still could not inspire the balance of the green and gold.

Next week the Rovers face the long haul to the Old Essendon Grammarians mudheap and will need  to be on the ball for 4 quarters to challenge the flag favourites.

FINAL SCORES: Old Paradians 18.12.120 defeated Rovers 11.14.80

GOALS: B.Artz 4, Power 3, Andersen, Boyd, Purcella, Greenwood.

BEST: B.Artz, D.Artz, M.Fletcher, Andersen.

To top of a disastrous weekend, the Rovers Reserves and Under 19’s were also beaten. The 19’s now must win their remaining 3 games to have any chance of a finals berth.
