Bad day out for Rovers

In miserable conditions at Brighton Beach Oval on Saturday, the Rovers put in one of their most dismal performances in recent times to go down to Old Brighton by 82 points.

With a strong rivalry built up between the two sides, especially after the Rovers win at Brighton last season, the home side came out firing with the Rovers not able to get a goal on the board until the third quarter.

It was just one of those days for the Rovers, poor handling of the ball and nothing going their way, in the strong wind and rain.

The Rovers improved slightly in the last quarter kicking 4 goals and outscoring the home side. A great goal by Tony Pucella, running half the ground, dodging and weaving around a number of opponents, was probably the only highlight for the Rovers.

With the loss, Hampton are still 2 – 2, sitting 7th (equal 4th) on the ladder.

Final Scores:

OLD BRIGHTON 6.9 9.11 14.17 17.19 (121)
HAMPTON ROVERS 0.1 0.2 1.5 5.9 (39)

Goals: S Anderson L Fletcher Greenwood Pucella Rayson.
Best:
Browne Wilmott Carr L Fletcher Artz C McKellar.

Meanwhile at Boss James Reserve, the Under 19’s had a 90-point win over Old Ivanhoe, giving them a 3 – 1 start to the 2003 season.

Next week, the Hampton Rovers take on 9th-placed Mazenod at home. Back at Boss James Reserve, the home side will be looking for a strong performance in front of their home fans. Bookings for the pre-match luncheon can be made here.
