Hampton Rovers have climbed into second position on the Premier C Men’s ladder following a 45-point victory over Glen Eira/Old McKinnon at Packer Park on Saturday.
The Rovers recorded three wins across the five grades, with the senior men, reserves and thirds all enjoying strong victories. The result sees the senior men improve to 6-1 ahead of the King’s Birthday bye weekend, sitting second on the ladder behind unbeaten Fitzroy.
Senior Men
The Rovers continued their strong form with a convincing 15.18 (108) to 9.9 (63) victory over Glen Eira/Old McKinnon.
Despite controlling much of the opening quarter, the Rovers were unable to fully capitalise on their opportunities in front of goal. Tommy Keyte got the Rovers underway before Lachlan Costello and Tommy Keyte again helped establish an early lead. However, inaccurate kicking kept Glen Eira in the contest, with the margin just six points at quarter time despite Hampton registering significantly more scoring shots.
The Rovers began to gain control during the second term. Tommy Keyte proved a constant threat inside forward 50, kicking four goals for the quarter as Hampton gradually extended its advantage. Goals to Lui Coughlin and Jake Seddon also helped the visitors establish a 33-point lead at the main break.
The momentum continued after half time as Josh McPherson, Corey Jones and Christian Carnovale all hit the scoreboard. While Glen Eira battled hard, the Rovers consistently found answers and entered the final quarter with a 57-point advantage.
Glen Eira reduced the margin with a brief burst early in the last term, but goals to Liam O’Driscoll and Josh McPherson steadied the ship before Hampton ran out comfortable winners on the day.
Tommy Keyte produced one of his best performances in senior football, finishing with seven goals, while Christian Carnovale, Lui Coughlin, Joel Melnjak and Liam O’Driscoll were among the side’s best contributors.
