The Hampton Rovers Women’s best & fairest will receive the Sue Anderson Medal, while the best first year player will receive the Jodie Combe award.

The naming of the two awards were announced at Saturday’s final senior home game luncheon of 2017.

While the Bob Cave Medal has long been in existence for the senior men’s best & fairest, the reserves and under 19s were named in 2008 – Dom Devola Medal and McGregor Medal respectively. The committee took the decision to name the women’s awards in the inaugural year of the competition.

Sue Anderson’s name is synonymous with the Hampton Rovers Football Club and the Victorian Amateur Football Association. She is a life member of both, worked at the VAFA for a lengthy period, past committee member and continues to be a supporter of her favourite club - in attendance at every home game.

Jodie Combe was a gun footballer in her day, having played in her early years at the Hampton Rovers Football Club. Unfortunately, there was no footy pathway for women back then as there is now and as such, that’s where her football journey ended.

Both Sue and Jodie were interviewed by club president Stephen Anderson and their awards will be presented at the upcoming Hampton Rovers Senior Presentation Night to be held on Thursday 28th September (eve of the Grand Final public holiday) at the Sandringham Yacht Club – click here for details and to purchase tickets. Full season votes will also be read out at the Hampton Rovers Women’s Vote Count Night on Saturday 9th September at Boss James Reserve – view details.

Women’s football has been an outstanding success at the Hampton Rovers Football Club in 2017. The club hosted the very first VAFA Women’s match in front of a huge crowd under lights at Boss James Reserve and Rovers made the finals but struggled late due to injuries. In total, 47 players wore the green & gold in the inaugural team and we can’t wait for 2018!
