U9 Silver Coach's Report - Round 8
Published: Monday 4th June 2012 3:59 PM by HRAFCTwo thirds through the season & the Golds now sit at 5-3 after going down to East Malvern Knights at our “hoodoo ground” (Ludstone Street). For some reason, the boys travel well, winning all our away games & struggling at home. A kind of reverse Fremantle Dockers.
Our opponents were a mix of first and second year players, and we conceded a considerable height advantage. I’m sure I saw their number 34 parking his car before the game, with Paul Mulvey suggesting he may have just dropped his kids off at Auskick.
Nonetheless it was a terrific standard game of footy, with both teams linking together well & moving the ball freely up & down the ground. In the first quarter, Sam, Jonah, Luke Travers & Paddy kept us in the contest, with Olli Hotton kicking our only goal after a strong mark from a Jules Lohan pass.
The second & third quarters were a slog, with Max Roberts doing some great work on the backline, and Mitch Gathercole proving as elusive as ever down forward. Luke Nixon-Smith did what he’s been threatening to do all year, pulling in a genuine “speccy”. I keep telling him he’ll be the best marking forward in our team & I think he’s starting to believe it, which is great. There was plenty of other good work from Conor, Daniel, Zach Z & Daniel. But at 3/4 time we were a good 4 goals behind.
One thing about the Golds is that they never give up, and the boys fought out the last quarter right til the end. Best players in this quarter were Zach B, Sam, Jonah & both Lukes.
It’s time for a week’s break from games, resuming June 17. Details to follow. Thanks to all who helped out again, especially Interim Team Manager JC, Interim Asst Coach Sam Travers, and Team Motivator & Fitness Guru, John Sugananthan.
